On February 21, 2008 we made our second Coffee Shop Tour stop of the year. The Peppermill in Girard catered the event held at the Marvin Green Building at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. Despite the icy weather a LOT of Farmers and Ranchers turned out for free breakfast and coffee talk. Farm Director Emily Zwahlen didn't let the weather dampen her spirits as she interviewed Bob Duffin of Midwest Seed Genetics.

Four State Farm Show 2007
Four State Farm Show 2007

860 AM KKOW celebrates 70 years on the air this year. We've been researching our history and showcased some historical "artifacts" at this year's Four State Farm Show. Items on display included the original cover of the FCC application for us to become a station in 1936, KOAM Radio memoribilia such as lighters, belt buckles and pens, and pictures of KKOW staff of the past. Several former staff members stopped by our tent to take a look and many long time listeners enjoyed learning more about the station. We even dug up some old Kow Chips and invited everyone to take home a small piece of our history.

Greensburg Tornado Relief

The St. Paul and Girard FFA chapters donate time and muscle to clean-up efforts in Greensburg, Kansas. Twenty six FFA members, their FFA advisors and some moms pick up debris thrown into this CRP pasture north of town. The owners, the Gamble family , planned to use the ground as cropland this year. Preventing that progress are the shingles, boards, insulation and scraps of metal littering the area. The trip was a humbling experience - we spent the day picking up pieces of homes while a bus ride returned us to ours. Thank you, St. Paul and Girard FFA, for letting me ride along! - Emily Zwahlen
